Best Shops: Provider Store
Japanese craftsmanship, slow-made homewares.
Welcome to Best Shops, Wee Birdy’s global series uncovering the most delightful, original, and beautifully curated independent stores. Today, we’re stepping into the tranquil, sun-drenched world of Provider Store, the Sydney haven created by owner and maker Tara Bennett. Inside this bijou space, you’ll discover Japanese ceramics, hand-printed artworks, and daily essentials elevated by thoughtful design, where every object invites you to slow down and savour the beauty of the everyday.
I stumbled across Provider Store in 2020 while wandering through Sydney’s Surry Hills, drawn in by its bijou space and creative window display, which featured a stunning ‘Learning from Japan’ Design Museum Danmark poster. There’s something magnetic about the way Provider blends the utilitarian with the aesthetic: an ethos that’s evident from the moment you step inside.
The store’s compact footprint is packed with treasures, and I was greeted by the resident store pup Pocari and Tara Bennett, the friendly owner, who enthusiastically took me through her latest wares from Japan. I left with some small Japanese glass vessels and a saki cup, which now doubles as my favourite ring holder.
The story behind Provider Store
Provider Store began as an online and wholesale venture in 2014, but Tara opened her physical shopfront in Surry Hills in 2018. “I had a studio space in Surry Hills and we got the notice they were renovating the building and we had to leave. I had always wanted a store front. Then I saw this little shop up the road for lease and at the time I had no plans to open a bricks and mortar shop, but as soon as I came across this space I knew that it felt right,” Tara explains.
The shop itself is a marvel of thoughtful design. “When I first opened the store I found a second Japanese cabinet, which I absolutely loved. Years later when we renovated the store I asked the builders to design around it and it’s now built into our shop counter. All the shelves are also custom and we have an incredible peg wall for hanging and displaying. The space was designed so we could change it around as different items came into the store”.
What makes Provider special
Provider’s curation is guided by a simple, beautiful philosophy: “Basically everything needs to be practical as well as beautiful. I am a big believer that if you spend money on a quality everyday item, you'll look after it and have it for longer. I also don't believe in saving special items for special occasions, all our collections should be used everyday. Using and having beautiful things can enhance your home life”.
Tara’s own creative practice is at the heart of Provider Store. “I began with my workshop at the back of the store where I would sew, hand-paint cushions and make candles and then I would sell products from the front. It was only about 15sm² of retail space but I liked that people could come in and watch me sew and draw while also browsing”.
Standout pieces
Provider Store is a haven for those who appreciate craftsmanship and artistry. Among the stand-out products are Japanese ceramics, each piece unique and beautifully made, perfect for daily rituals or display. The store also offers affordable and highly collectable hand-printed lithograph artworks by Danielle Creenaune, an award-winning Australian artist and one of my friends from school. Wooden utensils, simple and tactile, are made to last, while handmade brushes and brooms elevate everyday tools to objects of beauty.
Candles are a signature offering at Provider Store. “Our candles are pretty special. We work directly with family run workshops in Tajimi, Japan to create each and every candle vessel. I really wanted them to be something more than just a disposable one use thing. I work with makers to design each cup with the intention that they can be washed out and reused as a ceramic coffee or tea cup after you finish.
“We also do candle refills at the store, to encourage people to actually burn their candles and enjoy them every day instead of just special occasions,” Tara shares. The Provider House x @aroma essential oil is another highlight. “It smells like a Japanese forest with hints of the Australian bushland.”
The experience
Provider Store is more than just a shop – it’s a welcoming, creative space. “The store is a place that while small, is so warm and welcoming. Anyone can visit and just have a little explore. It's a 'no pressure' environment so no one should ever feel like they shouldn't pop in. I love it when people say they feel inspired in there. It means we are capturing that essence of travel and creativity well”.
The Wee Birdy verdict
Provider Store is a rare gem in Surry Hills. A shop where every object tells a story and beauty is found in the everyday. Whether you’re after a hand-thrown Japanese cup, a one-of-a-kind artwork, or simply a little inspiration, Tara’s warm welcome and impeccable curation make this a must-visit. I’ll be back for more candle refills (and perhaps another saki cup or two).
